A Chorus Line

A CHORUS LINE: After a long struggle in search of selfhood and one's ipseity, every member of the chorus ended up as One singular sensation, One singular body. This sense of conformity and loss of individuality at the very end evokes a tinge of sympathy in me for every one of the characters, especially Cassie.

'What I did for Love' made me tear up so bad. Despite having heard it one youtube countless of times before, it was totally different hearing it in context with the entire show, in the theatre. Plus the run-in lines by various characters made it even more poignant. The whole scene reminded me of how difficult it is to chase one's dreams in today's intensely competitive environment; the amount of sacrifices one has to make and the effort to fight for that dream; and how much one has to lose if one day you are forced to give it all up or you do not make it. When the entire chorus sang the last few lines together, my heart wrenched. A palpable sense of melancholy hung in the air, and in that very moment, I felt so strongly for each and every one of the characters on stage. I think what appealed to me most in this scene was how, every character was fighting so hard for love; not superficial love for a particular person, but love for their art and their craft. The immense passion each character had for dance was what kept them going, and thus, when they sang of all they have given up for this love, it truly tugged so hard at my heart strings. (Side Note: Karlee Misipeka, who sang the solo in what i did for love, was AMAZING! plus she is so friendly and so lovely! I love her!)

When the final item came, with every member of the chorus dressed in identical costumes, dressing identical dance steps, in an utterly uniform formation, I felt a strange mix of happiness and sadness for the characters. It was as though, yes the whole act was perfect, no one stood out and everything blended perfectly (just as it should), but yet, every character seemed to have loss something that they were desperately trying to grapple with in the very beginning – their identity.

A Chorus Line was no WICKED with all its spectacular sets and costumes, instead, it was a very simple, real and raw show, that was nonetheless just as amazing! In fact, I was especially moved by how genuine and realistic every chorus member's back-stories were, and how the rigorous, intensive nature of Broadway auditions and Broadway one a whole were portrayed. I really enjoyed the show very much, and the cast was so so beautiful and super talented! Great material, great orchestra, amazing amazing choreo, and special mention to creative and impactful lighting design (though one of the follow-spot operators was really bad!)!

Won't forget, can't regret

(Side Note: interesting experience stage dooring alone. The cast was so so lovely!)
